Y’all are welcome in Texas (virtually)

Y’all are welcome at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Women in Law for an online conversation with me on Wednesday, October 19 at 1 p.m. Central Time as part of their “Ex Libris” authors series.

It’s free, but you’ll need to register here. If you’re a lawyer, you can earn 1 hour of Continuing Legal Education credit if you join us online as we talk about Title IX and my book 37 Words. But everyone is welcome. So listen in, and bring your questions!

And I’m about to hit the non-virtual, asphalt-and-concrete road on a book tour that will take me to Syracuse, Erie, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Atlanta, Toledo, Cleveland, and possibly points in between over the next month.

You won’t see much original writing on the 37 Words blog during this time, but I’ll share photos when I can. Please let your friends in those cities know of events as I post them, and come on down yourself!

Elsewhere

A master harp player and music instructor sued the University of Miami for gender-based pay discrimination. Wenatchee (Wash.) Valley College reached a voluntary agreement with the Office for Civil Rights to settle a complaint that it discriminates against women in athletics.

Rallies at Brigham Young University and other campuses objected to the use of Title IX exemptions for religious schools that want to discrimination against LGBTQ+ students and employees. Attempts at anti-transgender laws are on the rise, the Washington Post reports: up from 19 bills submitted by state legislators in 2018 to 155 bills in 2022. The State of Florida is threatening to suspend the license of any kindergarten through third-grade teachers who discussions anything related to LGBTQ people, a follow-up to the state’s “don’t say gay” law.

A community discussion at Randolph (Vt.) Union High School about a 14-year-old transgender girl’s use of the locker room, and the hateful messages and threats directed at the girl and the school, drew 250 people for a charged but civil discussion. People were not so civil in Dearborn, Mich., where the school board had to suspend a meeting when hundreds of conservatives who want to ban books with LGBTQ+-related content verbally clashed with LGBTQ+ allies. The New Hampshire Bulletin wrote an incisive profile of school districts struggling to balance the rights of transgender students with demands from parents and their conservative supporters.

The former president of Florida International University, who resigned after being accused of sexual harassment, will return to teach one class per semester at more than twice the average annual salary of tenured professors. An Academic Sexual Misconduct Database that tracks cases of faculty misconduct now contains more than 1,100 cases. An athlete who was suspended for sexual misconduct sued Brown University. The Title IX saga at Michigan State University continues: The Faculty Senate approved a vote of no confidence in the Board of Trustees for interfering with management, and the university president resigned.

A new poll found that women were more likely than men to say that getting a college education would be financially difficult or unaffordable, even at an in-state public college.

On the up side

A 22-year-old man arrested by federal agents confessed that he plotted to shoot women at an Ohio university. At least they got him before he did it.

The Nation magazine published an excerpt from my chapter 5, which introduces Title IX’s application in the movement against sexual violence. I published an article in the Washington Post’s Made by History section, this one on “The true mother of Title IX. And why it matters now more than ever.” The Christian Science Monitor included 37 Words in two articles — a cover story on “Title IX at 50” and a sidebar examining the racial gap among women athletes in colleges. Read about the Supreme Court’s history of curtailing Title IX and other civil rights laws in my article in The Washington Post Made by History section. The Washington Monthly gave 37 Words a fine review — check it out. The Wall Street Journal published a review of my book and I wrote a Letter to the Editor correcting some misinformation in that review. See other previous appearances and media coverage of 37 Words listed here.
