Talking Title IX in Concord, N.H.
I’m headed for the New Hampshire state capital to speak at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord on Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. Meet me at 45 South Main Street to discuss Title IX in the Granite State and my book 37 Words: Title IX and Fifty Years of Fighting Sex Discrimination (The New Press).
Spoiler: New Hampshire colleges and universities still don’t comply with Title IX. But you already guessed that. Meanwhile, some state legislators tried three times in the past three years to ban transgender students from athletics, but they haven’t succeeded. Yet. That would be another violation of Title IX.
And as long as you’re in Concord — Earlier that day, at 12:00 noon I’ll join folks from Third Act at the Bank of America at 118 Storrs Street in a rally to Stop Funding Fossil Fuels that contribute to the climate crisis. Almost all of the “big banks” are profiting off of fossil fuels instead of banking on our future by investing in more renewable power and shunning greenhouse gases. Come help change that, for a livable planet!
Title IX news
Many insurers are dropping coverage of higher education institutions as the number of sexual-misconduct cases mount, the Chronicle of Higher Education reports. Other insurers are shifting some responsibility for legal fees and payouts for verdicts or settlements toward colleges. This might motivate administrators to finally do something about rape culture on campus. Money talks!
Republications in the U.S. House of Representatives want to amend Title IX to prevent transgender students from participating in athletics in their identified gender. They proposed H.R. 734 (118), the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, and got it through the Education and Workforce Committee on a party-line vote, Politico reported. The slim majority of Republicans in the House could pass the bill but it’s unlikely that the slim majority of Democrats in the Senate will consider it.
