I’ll be talking about Title IX in Syracuse on Monday, October 24 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time in Grewen Auditorium of Le Moyne College. The event is free and open to the public. Also that day, look for me on Bridge Street TV in an interview with 9WSYR.
If you’re near Erie, Penn. come chat with me during a book signing at Werner Books the next day, Tuesday, October 25 at 12 noon Eastern. And on Friday, October 28 we’ll kick off a two-day conference on Title IX hosted by Northwestern University with our 9 a.m. (Central Time) panel on Title IX history and more. A national analysis found no basis for claims that letting transgender girls play sports would drive cisgender students out of athletics — in fact, their numbers are growing. For a good summary of how state laws against abortion and LGBTQ people are burdening schools, see this USA Today article. A planned second public forum to discuss transgender students rights at Randolph (Vt.) Union High School had to be canceled because of the ongoing barrage of hate messages and threats. University of Arizona students and others on campuses across the nation walked out of classes to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Elsewhere, campus rallies objected to easy religious exemptions that allow schools to ignore Title IX and discriminate against LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff.
A volleyball coach sued the Portland (Ore.) Public Schools for inequities in athletics and pay discrimination. A Title IX investigation of Lake Oswego (Ore.) School District found no Title IX violations in athletics, a school official said.

My interview with the New Books in Women’s History podcast has launched and can be heard online. The Nation magazine published an excerpt from my chapter 5, which introduces Title IX’s application in the movement against sexual violence. I published an article in the Washington Post’s Made by History section, this one on “The true mother of Title IX. And why it matters now more than ever.” The Christian Science Monitor included 37 Words in two articles — a cover storyon “Title IX at 50” and a sidebar examining the racial gap among women athletes in colleges. Read about the Supreme Court’s history of curtailing Title IX and other civil rights laws in my article in The Washington Post Made by History section. The Washington Monthly gave 37 Words a fine review — check it out. The Wall Street Journal published a review of my book and I wrote a Letter to the Editor correcting some misinformation in that review. See other previous appearances and media coverage of 37 Words listed here.
